COUPLES COUNSELING

When engaging in couples counseling, I tailor the treatment to meet the needs of both individuals and the couple as a whole. I often begin the process by assigning the book, “Hold Me Tight” by Dr Sue Johnson. This book explores attachment dynamics, which helps to clarify the focus of the treatment. Both of you will gain insight into the mismatch in your attachment styles, as well as each other’s childhood attachment experiences. I will also assist in resolving your conflict and hold each of you accountable for your role in it.

Couples’ work requires patience, empathy, and a willingness to change. Each partner brings their own relationship history to the relationship, which dates back to infancy. Understanding your history will illuminate how and why you form attachments. Creating a safe space for each other’s histories will enable you to feel heard and understood, ultimately strengthening your bond. Furthermore, modifying your behavior to enhance safety and security can encourage your partner to adjust their behavior as well, facilitating effective conflict resolution.
If you choose to engage in couples therapy with me as your guide, you will benefit from the expertise of a skilled and experienced professional. I will be available for your scheduled weekly sessions, as well as for crisis intervention between sessions. As treatment progresses, you may find that you need my assistance less frequently; however, I will be available upon request whenever necessary.
